Quick Tips for Bunkering a Player
The format of the tournament game has evolved to a fast tempo style that
is conducive to small players who are quick in their speed and thought. A
byproduct of this change is the art of bunkering a player. The widely accepted
definition of bunkering someone is the move made by a player from his position
against an opponent who is hunkered down in a defensible spot on the field.
Here are some quick tips for bunkering a player.
1. Players who are quick will have the highest rate in bunkering someone
because speed will always help close the gap between where a player is, and
where a player needs to be.
2. When a player attempts to bunker someone, try your best not to come over
the top of the bunker because your paint won't feed properly and the angle
is not friendly towards a successful bunkering.
3. Most players are right-handed and will be shooting from the right side
of their spot. Therefore, the best chances are usually given to those who
come around the off-side of the bunker (the left side of a right-handed player
and the right side of a left-handed player). Be aware of players who can
play proficiently from both sides.
4. Try to get your teammates involved in the bunkering move from the start.
This entails that you communicate properly with your team. Let them know
where and what you plan to do. They will be able to provide you with cover
fire and spot out the other opposing players for you.
5. Don't hesitate because the window of opportunity between successfully
bunkering someone and failing miserably is easily closed.
6. Make sure the move is needed. The worst possible outcome is losing a player
who tried to bunker someone too far or too guarded.
7. There are usually two styles in bunkering someone; from head on and from
the angle. The head-on bunkering move is the easiest because you can use
the opponent's bunker to shield your move. The angle move requires more speed
and misdirection from your teammates.
